The region’s industry leaders have come together to encourage local school students to choose a career in health.

Around 70 teenagers from eight schools had the chance to talk to hospital staff, ask questions, and find out what makes healthcare so rewarding.

Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) CEO Ali Davenport said a collaborative approach is key to growing our workforce.

“We know that health is the largest employer in the region, and we want to keep it that way,” Ms Davenport said.

“There’s more than 13,000 hardworking hospital and health staff, which is around 15% of all jobs in the Toowoomba Region.”

“While this is something we’re really proud of, it’s important that we continue investing in the workers of the future as our city grows.”

The Health Industry Showcase Event, organised by TSBE, was made more significant by the recent funding announcement of a new $1.3 billion Toowoomba Hospital.

Darling Downs Health Chief Executive Annette Scott said there’s never been a better time to choose a career in health.

“Our vision for the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus will be an unrivalled health and knowledge precinct experience, centred around the new Toowoomba Hospital,” Ms Scott said.

“The facility is expected to open in the second half of 2027, and we’ll have plenty of fantastic job opportunities available as we deliver expanded health care services to the region.”

“This is why we want our high school students to be considering a career in health now, and in the years to come.”
